Behaviour Guidance in Childcare

Behaviour Guidance in Childcare – Supporting Children Positively

Behaviour guidance in childcare focuses on supporting children to understand emotions, develop self-regulation, and build positive relationships.

Rather than using punishment or control, modern early childhood practice uses positive, respectful and relationship-based approaches to guide behaviour.

This approach aligns with the EYLF and the National Quality Standard, particularly Quality Area 5, which focuses on relationships with children.

What is behaviour guidance?

Behaviour guidance is the process of helping children learn appropriate ways to express emotions, interact with others and respond to challenges.

It recognises that behaviour is a form of communication. Children’s actions often reflect underlying needs, emotions or developmental stages.

Key idea: Behaviour is not something to “fix” — it is something to understand and guide.

What is positive behaviour support?

Positive behaviour support focuses on teaching children skills rather than reacting to behaviour.

This includes helping children learn communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving and social skills.

What is co-regulation?

Co-regulation is when an educator supports a child to calm down and manage emotions through connection, guidance and reassurance.

Young children are not able to regulate emotions independently, so they rely on trusted adults to help them develop this skill over time.

How do educators guide behaviour in practice?

Effective behaviour guidance involves proactive and responsive strategies.

  • Building strong, trusting relationships
  • Setting clear and consistent expectations
  • Using calm, respectful communication
  • Modelling appropriate behaviour
  • Supporting emotional expression
  • Redirecting behaviour when needed
  • Providing choices and encouraging independence

These strategies help children feel safe and supported while learning appropriate behaviours.

What is challenging behaviour?

Challenging behaviour refers to actions that impact a child’s learning, safety or relationships.

This might include aggression, withdrawal, difficulty following routines or strong emotional reactions.

Understanding the cause of the behaviour is essential before responding.

How does behaviour guidance link to the NQS?

Behaviour guidance is strongly connected to Quality Area 5 – Relationships with Children.

It also connects to Quality Area 1 (educational program) and Quality Area 2 (children’s wellbeing).
